瀝青路面在長期使用的過程，也是瀝青混凝土材料老化的過程。隨著各項組成材料路用性能逐漸下降，路面自然會出現(xiàn)顏色變化。

剛生產(chǎn)出的瀝青混合料，由于瀝青完全裹附于石料表面，通常整體上呈黑色，鋪筑后大粒徑骨料與細集料粘結(jié)充分，影響光的反射，所以人們在視覺感受上發(fā)烏，沒有光澤。經(jīng)過一段時間后，大粒徑骨料表面的細集料被車輪摩擦和水沖刷失去，大骨料表面變得光滑，反光效果增強，人們感覺路面烏黑油亮。再經(jīng)過一段時間之后，由于水分、氧氣、紫外線等因素會發(fā)生瀝青的老化，骨料表面瀝青被摩擦脫落，石料本身顏色顯露，加上大量灰塵聚集在路面，瀝青路面整體上看上去呈灰白色。

瀝青混凝土主要是由瀝青、石料、礦粉等材料，按照一定的配比在嚴格的控制條件下加工而成。瀝青的顏色決定了瀝青路面的顏色，但對普通瀝青路面使用中的顏色漸變差異不明顯。石料部分通常的比重在90%以上，所以對各地區(qū)普通瀝青路面在老化后出現(xiàn)的顏色差異，影響較大。

瀝青混凝土在生產(chǎn)過程中由于質(zhì)量控制的原因（拌合時間過短或者瀝青投放量不夠）造成的顏色花白和不均勻，屬于產(chǎn)品質(zhì)量不合格，一般不會用于施工。需要注意的是，個別生產(chǎn)廠家生產(chǎn)級配不合理，為減少瀝青投放量而減低細集料摻加比例，瀝青路面鋪裝后，顏色整體較亮，但空隙率過大，水穩(wěn)定性下降。
